WSPR Scout

Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 25, 2025

1. Introduction

WSPR Scout ("the App") is an amateur radio application for viewing and analyzing WSPR (Weak Signal Propagation Reporter) spots and propagation data. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use the App.

2. Information We Collect

Depending on the features you use, the App may collect or process:

  • Location data: If you enable location services, we may use your approximate or precise location to display propagation spots on a map, show your grid square, or customize spot filtering. Location data may be stored locally on your device.
  • Amateur radio data: WSPR spots include call signs, frequencies, grid squares, and signal reports. This data is inherently public in the amateur radio community and may be fetched from public WSPR networks (e.g., WSPRnet) or stored locally when you use the App.
  • App preferences: Settings such as frequency bands, filters, map preferences, and display options may be stored locally on your device.
  • Device information: We may collect anonymous diagnostics, device type, and app version for crash reporting or to improve the App. This does not include personally identifiable information unless you voluntarily provide it.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Display WSPR spots and propagation data on maps and in lists
  • Provide features that depend on your location (e.g., distance from spots, local propagation view)
  • Remember your preferences and settings
  • Fix bugs and improve app performance
  • Comply with applicable laws and regulations

4. Data Storage and Third Parties

Most data used by the App is stored locally on your device. When the App fetches WSPR spot data, it may connect to public amateur radio databases or APIs (such as WSPRnet). These services have their own privacy practices; we do not control data held by such third parties.

We do not sell your personal information. Any analytics or crash reporting we use is limited to non-identifying information to improve the App.

5. Amateur Radio and Public Data

WSPR spots are part of the global amateur radio ecosystem. Call signs, grid squares, frequencies, and signal reports are routinely shared in the public domain by operators and databases. By using WSPR Scout, you acknowledge that spot data displayed in the App may include your own call sign and grid square if you have transmitted WSPR signals, and such data is already public.

6. Your Choices

You can control location access through your device settings. Disabling location will limit certain features (e.g., distance calculations, map-centered views) but the App can still display and analyze spot data. You can clear local storage or uninstall the App at any time to remove locally stored data.

7. Children

The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us so we can delete it.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated policy with a new "Last updated" date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

9. Contact Us

For questions about this Privacy Policy or WSPR Scout's data practices, please contact us via the Coupletic contact form or the contact information provided within the App.
